rekonq 0.8 beta1

Here we are again, as promised, blogging about last rekonq development release.
As usual, here is the list of the new features implemented:

  • AdBlock: Third Party rules support
  • custom urlbar context menu (paste & go action, etc..)
  • set editable feature (for developers)
  • tabs history included in tabs restore
  • UI changes (in rekonq menu)
  • quit closes app (and added option to close window by closing last tab)
  • use KParts to view page source (and do not download source twice)
  • “click” mechanism to manage favorites
  • SSL UIs rewamped
  • “Do Not Track” feature
  • history, time first visit added
  • Tab messages using KMessageWidget
  • improved drag’n’drop
  • vi style navigation (optional)
  • ctrl + number favorites shortcuts

Just let me point out that this release will be fully tested against Qt 4.7.x, QtWebKit 2.0.x and KDE SC 4.7. It seems in fact that the upcoming and shining QtWebKit 2.2 will be released too late to properly test it against our new release.
Anyway, after this important month of clean up and bugfixing, we’ll try to prepare a new shining release (or at least its beta) for Christmas, fully tested against QtWebKit 2.2 and containing last announced features. Don’t let me say more about for the moment: let us work instead to let the upcoming stable release shine 🙂

  1. New version, but no extensions support on the horizon. Are you sure that adding “vi style navigation” or “history, time first visit added” will steal linux users to firefox/chrome/opera? I have to think that this, imho, killer feature is very hard to commit in rekonq…

For what it worth, congrats for the new upcoming release but I’ll continue to use, sigh, my extensions-filled-gtk-browser ;(

  2. “Do Not Track” feature
yeah 😀 thats nice to have. rekonq is atm my favorite browser.
one request – if you enabled the ‘load plugins manually’ option, you dont have the flashplayer installed and you go to a site with, klick on ‘load plugin’. will rekonq0.8 crash like 0.7? i can not test it atm :s

  3. “vi style navigation”… do want 🙂

  4. Everytime i read about rekonq i think “wow, that thing rocks!”, install it, give it a spin and remember why i uninstalled it the last time: its painfully slow and adblock makes it even slower. On a core i5.

And no, thats not qtwebkit, konqueror with kdewebkit is as fast as firefox/chrome/epiphany with lots of plugings and whatsoever.

  5. I’m using git at the moment, and it is indeed a very good browser, but the thing it really need to beat chromium/firefox is speed, not page load time, but the whole ui freezes if you try to load 5 tabs at the same time (go to a folder in bookmark toolbar and choose “open folder in tabs”) it can be minutes until I can use those 5 webpages, because I can’t even change tabs.
What’s the cause of this? qt? webkit? kdewebkit? javascript engine?
Apart from that it’s an excelent browser, though the start page needs a bit more love.

    • slowness in parallel loading depends on the fact that QtWebKit1 is designed using an unique app to load UI, rendering and network processes. Hope that QtWebKit2 (available in Qt5) will help improving this situation.

  6. I couldn’t use Rekonq 0.7.0 because of the crashes. Now I’m using version 0.7.57 and it still crashes a lot! I know it’s not a stable version but the latest version is crashing less than the stable one.

As @damian said the whole ui freezes if you try to load 5 (3 in my case) at the same time! T_T. Anyway I love Rekonq but I hope that version 0.8 will fix all of these issues.

PD: Sorry for my bad English, it’s not my native language haha 😛

  8. I too have lots of crashes 😦 Both 0.7.0 and the new beta are very unstable, compared to running konq. + the webkit backend.

  9. Hopefully the developement keeps the pace. Unfortunately I can’t switch till 2013 (webkit 2 and extensions) :p

Chromium is my last non-qt app and rekonq is pretty much the only hope for good Qt-based browser, so thank you for your work.

  10. When is the Chrome extensions support coming? Pretty much the only thing that’s keeping me on firefox is extensions, and pretty much the only reason i don’t use chromium is because it doesn’t integrate well in KDE. i’m giving rekonq a try once in a while, but without extensions it’s worthless for me, as i’m used to some of those.

    • Just to be clear, for you and for everyone, we never promised (or try to impement) Chrome Extensions support. An indipendent developer tried, announced, couldn’t really do it and then disappeared. And (eventually) implementing it, is completely different to implement a proper own plugin support mechanism.

    • @ivan: Sei veramente imbecille.

PS: thank you adjam for all the efforts and dedication. Lots of ppl are truly grateful, rekonq is coming along really nicely.

Ciao.

  12. If ads are your problem, don’t use adblock or something like that!

Just edit your hosts file to redirect any ad site to your localhost.

Here is a hosts file with ad pages blocked. 🙂

  13. I never know about that.
But to be clear much people here wait for this to switch to rekonq.
With no extensions support you are loosing many potential people, yo ushould considere mkaing it an official task and add it officially to the roadmap.
For my part i will never switch to rekonq without such thing.

  14. i know this should depend on qtwebkit, but was the page loading speed improved in some way? i now find it a lot faster at loading *very long* pages (using the native qt graphics system – raster doesn’t work)!

keep working, you’re doing a nice job!

  15. I don’t really need extensions if all of the features I want are built-in to the browser (I myself prefer them built-in.). But I also think that third-party features (via extension) can off load the work of the main project developing features themselves.

Still, If you can build in Ad-block, Ghostery, Readability and Grab n’ Drag (PDF-like scrolling) I’ll be sound as a pound. Well, also I would like the UI to be more polished like Google Chrome. Oh, and definitely fix all the hangs/freezes/non-responsiveness issues everyone’s been having.
