I wanna start this post giving my big kudos to the amarok 2.7 “minor tune”. Generally speaking, as developers we know our software life cycle includes major breakages as well as minor tunes. As users, we only understand things like speed, features, fast new astonishing releases and so on 🙂
rekonq just comes out from a major breakage. This was really needed in my opinion to let easier (possible?) properly maintain codebase and to experiment all the new features we have in mind and were not possible (without kludges) in 1.x.
So here is what happened in this “less than a month” period, also thanks to 2.0 breakage:
BUGS FIXED
- kpart “half window” problem
- spellchecking (working against qtwebkit 2.3 beta1)
- webapp with window favicon
- default application’s locale for date formatting in history
- history ordering by date (and not by number of visits, sorry 😀 )
- one stupid crash while adding a favorite
FEATURES BACK
- restored usual web inspector position at the bottom
- option to open tab at the end
- restored bookmark middle click action
- edit toolbars
- shorcuts configuration panel
NEW FEATURES
- better kpart integration
- remove history items from history page
- improved icon management (snappier)
- some work to let work better Google Bookmark sync
This signs also our first release with our new development model where no branches are created and master contains everytime the next code to release. Next target: rekonq 2.2, with another bunch of fixes and minor features coming.
Last, but not less important, this is first rekonq after QtWebkit 2.3 beta1 release. Great kudos also to “qtwebkitters” for this milestone reached and an advise: if you can, please upgrade your qtwebkit copy to it. In a couple of hours testing, I found more than 10 bugs reported in rekonq bugzilla no more reproducible against qtwebkit 2.3b1.

Hi, every some week I use to check out rekonq and now I’m finding it real ready for my daily use, replacing firefox’s monster app, thanks a lot, It’s real stable and very fast.
But at the moment (rekonq 2.1 KDE 4.9.5 on arch) shortcuts for switching search engines do not work ending with a file search, I’m ending always up with
“Oops : file:///home/username/gg test not found”.
And two thing I’m missing: “copy tab url” in tab menu and “toggle cookies accept” button.

Hmm, for me on Kubuntu with the 4.10 packages at least, ReKonq 2.1 still doesn’t appear to have working spellcheck. For example, “asdfasfjsafjas” . . . nope, no red squiggly underneath. I noticed that libqtwebkit4 is at version 2.2.1-4ubuntu1, I suppose then that I’d have to wait for a version >= 2.3 beta1 for spellcheck to start working again?

Oh, hmm, the option to use the favicon of the pages as Rekonq’s window icon also seems to be broken now. Odd.
I do not want to be destructive but managing the history and bookmarks is quite complicated. Would be possible to have the sidebar as in the previous version? How can I hide the bookmarks that I don’t want to see in theirs folders? How do I access bookmarks? My home page is google. Do I have to go to the history page whenever you want to select a bookmarks?

Hi, I’m using rekonq since the last year and I have to say it’s getting really good with every version, but since always I’ve seen a problem with cache and images.
Every time I close rekonq and open it again, it downloads the entire website again… wasting time and resources, if I reload a page it does the same thing. This results in a lot of images not shown with my slow connection and frustration every time I have to visit my favorite websites, but I can’t reload the page for the same reason.
I hate to compare, but when I open a website with firefox it just download things that have changed since my last visit, and if I reload it checks again. If I close firefox and open it again, the cached images are still there and makes faster my browsing.
Also, when I want to see an image and right click on it and choose view image, downloads the image, yet again. Why? Am I missing some option?
I really love the work you have done with rekonq but this little details are annoying. 😀
Someone wrote it before in this blog, but I’m so frustrated, I have to say it again: I miss the bookmarks side panel every day, every hour.
I remember, that It took me some days to attune with it, but then It gave me new posibillities i.e. to collect some less important, unsorted bookmarks on the top level, a wonderfull way to be messy without losing the overview. The horizontal panel can’t display all my trashy bookmarks, so I have to restart my clean up neurosis.
More about bookmarks: In the previous version I had a custom bookmark icon to access all my bookmarks (much like firefox or most any browser that isn’t chrome/ium). This appears to be gone now. In fact, the only way that I see to access the bookmarks is through the bookmarks tab.
Is this functionality removed, or am I missing something?
It has been removed in the big move to 2.0. It has been rewamped and merged in master, actually. You’ll find it again in the upcoming 2.2

I needed a fifth browser for Fedora 17 (because of sort of a backlog of open tabs, really) and ReConq 2.1 is slim and fast if a little opaque in the AdBlock blacklist selection, and too eager to reload all tabs (v. just show the tab bit with cached favicon, and load on tab selection.) Thanks for turning out such a quality piece of work! (It makes me want to try the KDE desktop…once I remember where my kde wallet pass went.
This brings things ’round to the Accessorization or whatever user javascript is called…as heralded months ago but not too much in evidence; ah, is it around?
